THE GERMAN HYGIENE MUSEUM (DRESDEN)

Autumn and cool weather back? It’s the perfect time to warm up and get back to visiting museums!

Permanent exhibition

Today, we’re taking you to Altstadt, between the Old Town and Grosser Garten, to discover the German Hygiene Museum. This is Dresden’s most popular museum, with no fewer than 300,000 visitors a year.

After buying our tickets and putting our belongings in the basement lockers, we head upstairs to discover, first of all, the permanent exhibition. Entitled “Human Adventure”, it is divided into 7 themes:

1) THE GLAZED HUMAN
2) LIVING AND DYING
3) FOOD AND DRINK
4) SEXUALITY
5) REMEMBER – REFLECT – LEARN
6) MOVEMENT
7) BEAUTY, SKIN AND HAIR

Covering an area of 2,000m² and featuring 1,300 exhibits, we discovered the human being from every angle. We really appreciated the interactivity of the collection. We were able to touch, listen, test our strength and balance, dance, simulate the effects of certain pathologies, smell, play with our brains, and so on. In this way, the exhibition appeals to young and old alike, and makes certain subjects more accessible.

Temporary exhibition

As it was already 5.30pm when we finished visiting this first part, and knowing the Germans and their punctuality, we hurried off to the temporary exhibition entitled “Hello Happiness(available until November 19, 2023).

In 20 minutes, we barely had time to immerse ourselves in the universe and its 6 sections.

Nevertheless, there is still this high level of interactivity, with a mini-party club (with the possibility of changing the music, brightness and color), a compliment machine (see image above), a personality test to find out which Winny the Pooh character we’re closest to (not surprisingly, Maxence has the same personality as Piglet), and a room dedicated to the forest.

Conclusion

In Germany, time is time, and at 6pm we had to leave the museum, although we would have liked to have stayed a little longer. Allow at least 2 hours to visit the entire museum.

Its success is amply deserved, thanks to its interactivity and its ability to appeal to all audiences.
